HPD Joins H.E.A.T. for
Traffic Enforcement on I-270

If you've been noticing more Hazelwood police officers patrolling the stretch of I-270 going through our city limits, they're doing it as part of the department's participation in the statewide H.E.A.T. campaign.

This acronym stands for (High Enforcement Action Team), which has been formed along the I-270 corridor to help curtail dangerous, aggressive and hazardous driving by local motorists.  Also, they will be on the lookout for seat belt violators.

new_logo_jpegThe Hazelwood Police Department (HPD) is joining the following law enforcement agencies in maintaining a highly visible effort on I-270: Missouri State Highway Patrol; St. Louis County; Florissant, Ferguson; Bridgeton; Maryland Heights; Creve Coeur; and Town & Country police departments.  This statewide H.E.A.T. campaign began on June 21 and will end on September 21, which is considered the height of the summer driving season.

A study of accident statistics from 2009 revealed there were nearly 1,700 traffic crashes on I-270. The factors involved in causing many of those accidents were hazardous moving violations such as following too close, driving too fast for road conditions, failing to yield and excessive speeding. The H.E.A.T. campaign will focus on the times and days where hazardous moving violations are most prevalent and enforcement can be most useful.

The statewide H.E.A.T. campaign is sponsored by the Missouri Highway Safety Division and some funding is provided through on-going traffic safety grants. The I-270 H.E.A.T. campaign is being coordinated through the St. Louis Regional Traffic Safety Council.
